Chapter Eight

Somewhere in Time

Two more days went by. By this time we had come to realize that we were well beyond the borders of the known reaches of the African continent. The great central plateau seemed to rise ever higher forcing us to greater altitude. We now flew above a land upon which no white European had ever set eyes granting us both humility of heart as well as a certain discomfort of mind. Maps were no longer of any use, our only bearing now the one that Williams had established that night while witnessing the anomaly. Upon my orders, we now travelled at a greatly reduced speed. Like a seagoing vessel navigating uncharted waters, the reduction in velocity meant less of a chance of crashing as we weaved over and about the rolling rock-infested hills and treacherous mountain peaks. As we cruised on average at just over three hundred feet, we could see below at times flowing rivers and dense swamps whose banks were often laden with dense jungle undergrowth. Upon those lands which were open savannah, great herds of grazing animals dominated the grasses and would scatter upon the approach of our vessel’s great shadow. Flocks of birds by the millions of every size and color rested upon the surface of shallow lakes. Waterfalls, some taller than the Eifel Tower, plunged with malignant force over rocky cliffs. The world for us now seemed a vast and primordial realm giving rise to images of roaming prehistoric beasts and a brief history of time when humans ne’er walked the earth. It remained both exhilarating and frightening as we knew any error on our part or malfunction of our transport could render us lost and alone for all eternity.

It was with those thoughts that I suddenly imagined the plight of my parents all those years before. Had they crashed? Were they down there somewhere perhaps still alive, never knowing the fate of their wee daughter? By chance were they looking up, seeing us sailing overhead and unable to signal us for rescue? My heart sank ever lower at those ideas and I excused myself to the confines of my bunk until such time as I could compose myself. I was certain both Maggie and Williams knew my heart’s longing and so respectfully never pressed the issue or tried to console me.

We had neither heard nor seen anything unusual since our departure from British East giving us to wonder what was happening elsewhere in the world. I had become so used to the interspersed sound of the drums that I now almost missed them, even wary as to why they no longer manifested themselves. Maggie, meanwhile, was becoming increasingly irritable, even obsessive, as every hour or so she would roll back the panel revealing the time mechanism’s controls just to see if it had somehow activated itself as before. Nerves for all of us were raw and frayed to the point of tearing. When I suggested to my partner that she leave
